Why staying hydrated is so important

In the health industry, there’s frequent talk of miracle cures. Just take this one pill, or try this one herb, and it will solve all your health problems! The funny thing is, in many ways, there’s already a real “miracle cure” out there: water.

Few substances can so dramatically improve your health in so many ways, if consumed regularly. On the other hand, being dehydrated (and many people are) comes with a plethora of detrimental effects. Here’s just a handful of the reasons you should be getting 2+ liters of water every day.

You’ll get fewer headaches

Before you pop an ibuprofen, consider drinking a big glass of water instead. Headaches from dehydration are very common. In fact, you may not even “feel thirsty”, but the source of your headache could still be a lack of water. Frequent dehydration can also trigger migraines, so drink up.

You’ll be in a better mood

One study found that frequent water consumption can put you in a better mood. They had participants who drank less than 1.2 liters increase their intake to 2.5, and soon found significant boosts in awareness, happiness, and overall energy. On the other hand, those who decreased their water consumption for the study became more fatigued and discontented.

Your heart will be healthier

Put simply, drinking enough water lets your heart more easily pump blood. And having a healthier heart is an invaluable health asset. Taken from a long-term view, water can help prevent against heart disease, heart attacks, and stroke.

You can focus better at work

Some studies found that sipping water while engaging in mental problem solving can actually help you perform better. Those tested answered more problems correctly, and more quickly. Conversely, being even a little dehydrated can reduce your cognitive abilities.

Your skin will look nicer

Drinking plentiful amounts of water keeps your skin younger much longer; the water in the cells lends it a plumper effect. It also flushes out toxins in your skin, meaning you’re less likely to break out than you would if you were dehydrated.

If you’ve never been much of a water drinker, don’t despair. It’s not too late to change. Put a reminder on your phone. Make a note on your fridge to grab a glass of water with every snack you eat. In no time at all, you’ll be reaping the rich rewards.
