5 Signs You’re Too Sick for Work

Cold and flu season is in full swing, and chances are, you may be reluctant to stay home from work if you’re sick. We understand that calling your boss for a sick day can be stressful. However, heading into the office when you’re sick can expose your coworkers to a contagious illness. So before packing up your tissues and heading to work, check out the following signs to determine whether or not you should stay home.

Reasons to Stay Home From Work

  1. Fever

A fever is a definite sign of being contagious. We recommend staying home for a least 24 hours after your temperature subsides on its own. Remember to stay hydrated with water, iced tea, or juice to replenish lost fluids.

  1. Cold Medication Drowsiness

Although you may want to reach for the cold medication to control your runny nose, sneezing, and itchy eyes, be aware that you may experience drowsiness. Not only does your risk of injury increase, but your productivity is likely to be poor as well. Be sure to read the labels to find information on dosage and side effects.

  1. Stomach Woes

Diarrhea and vomiting can be symptoms of a stomach virus, which is extremely contagious. While there is no cure, there are remedies to provide relief during the toughest phases, such as fluids, rest, and medication.

  1. Chills and Body Aches.

Chills and body aches are the most common cold and flu symptoms. Body aches can manifest anywhere in the body, particularly in the head, back, and neck. To ease the aches, take over-the-counter pain medication, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen. To reduce chills and increase your body temperature, wrap yourself in a warm blanket.

  1. Sore Throat

A severe sore throat can mean strep throat, which is extremely contagious. In this case, it’s critical to visit the doctor for a throat culture and wait for the results before heading back to work. If the result is positive, you’ll be prescribed an antibiotic. People typically return to work after 24 hours of starting the medicine.
