5 Vaccination Myths Debunked
When it comes to health care and vaccinations, there’s a lot of dangerous misinformation. Here are 5 major vaccine myths that research has shown to be baseless.
Vaccine Myths Debunked
Myth #1: Vaccines Cause Autism.
In 1997, a study suggesting that vaccines were increasing autism in children was published. Ever since then, there has been a widespread fear of vaccines. However, the paper has been discredited and retracted due to undisclosed financial conflicts of interests, ethical violations and procedural errors. Today, major organizations, including the World Health Organization, have failed to find any link between vaccinations and autism.
Myth #2: Vaccinations contain harmful toxins.
While it’s true that vaccinations contain trace amounts of Thimerosal, an organic, mercury-containing compound, here is no scientific evidence that the low levels of this chemical in vaccines can be harmful.
Myth #3: Vaccines aren’t necessary.
Some people believe that vaccines aren’t necessary because disease has been eradicated worldwide. However, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), smallpox is the only infectious human disease that has been eradicated. There are still outbreaks of measles, mumps, and pertussis, so vaccines are necessary to protect you when you’re around individuals who aren’t vaccinated.
Myth #4: Vaccines are only meant for children.
Vaccines aren’t just for kids. Adults, travelers, and pregnant women all need to be vaccinated. Adults should get the following vaccines:
- Influenza
- Tdap
- Zoster
- Pneumococcal
Myth #5: Children can’t handle multiple vaccines at one time.
Studies show that combining multiple vaccines at one time carries no risk for adverse side effects. In fact, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend children receive several routine childhood vaccines at once.
