Common Flu Season Myths
Flu season is in full swing, which mean fevers, aches, coughing and nausea. Along with symptoms, you can expect a lot of unreliable and incorrect information regarding the flu. Fortunately, we’re here to separate flu season fact from fiction.Flu Season Myths
Myth #1: You don’t need a flu shot if you’re young and healthy.
The flu can happen to anyone, regardless of their age. Although young and healthy individuals may be less likely to suffer from complications from the flu, they can still benefit from being vaccinated. Current guidelines recommend children ages 6 months to 19 years old, pregnant women, and anyone over 49 receive the flu shot each year.
Myth #2: The flu shot can give you the flu.
The flu shot contains an inactivated virus, so it’s biologically impossible to catch an illness from it. However, it’s normal to experience flu-like symptoms after receiving the flu shot. This is a normal side effect and should subside within a couple of days.
Myth #3: Antibiotics help individuals recuperate from the flu.
Antibiotics aren’t meant to treat viruses. Instead, they treat diseases caused by microrganisms. We recommend calling our doctors at Lakeview Medical Center if you think you’ve been infected with the flu.
Myth #4: One flu shot will last you for several years.
The CDC recommends receiving a flu shot once every year, typically in October or November. Even if you got vaccinated the season before, it’s important to get the vaccine. How long your flu shot lasts will depend on how powerful your immune system reacts to it.
Myth #5: It’s too late to get a flu shot.
Flu season lasts from October through March. While we recommend receiving the vaccine by the end of October, it’s never too late to protect yourself from the flu. The more people who get vaccinated, the less likely a flu epidemic will occur.
