Summer Health and Safety: 5 Mistakes to Avoid
Summer is right around the corner, which means it’s time for BBQs, pool parties, and vacations. However, it’s possible to get caught up in the fun and forget about potential health woes. Here are common mistakes to avoid to ensure you and your family enjoy a healthy summer.
Common Summer Health Mistakes
Mistake #1: Forgetting the sunscreen
Only one-third of Americans apply sunscreen on a regular basis, which has led to an increase of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. We recommend using a sunscreen with an SPF 30 or higher.
Mistake #2: Not staying hydrated
During the hot summer months, it’s easy to become dehydrated. We recommend drinking at least eight to nine glasses of water a day. If you’re bored of water, add fruit or vegetables to add some flavor. If you’re drinking alcohol, alternate a glass of water with every alcoholic drink.
Mistake 3: Avoiding pool safety.
Swimming is a great way to beat the summer heat while burning calories. However, it’s important to remain safe during this summer pastime. To protect yourself and your children, never swim alone and make sure everyone is supervised. If necessary, encourage your children to wear life jackets. If you’re not a strong swimmer, consider signing up for swimming lessons.
Mistake #4: Not protecting against ticks
Lyme disease, a common tick-borne disease, causes fatigue, fever, body aches, and headaches. To protect against tick bites and prevent Lyme Disease, avoid wooded and bushy areas and wear protective clothing. Using insect repellent may also offer added protection. Keep in mind that ticks are most prevalent in late June and July.
Mistake #5: Avoiding food safety.
Food poisoning peaks in the summer months due to germs flourishing in the hot temperatures. To avoid ingesting harmful bacteria, remember to wash your hands and prep surfaces before and after they touch raw meat.
